Angel Charette is a recent graduate of the Graphic Design program at Cambrian College and has been a Registered Graphic Designer with RGD since 2013. She has two daughters, Kyra (11) and Mya (8), who love watching her design projects, program websites and giggle while she fusses over which font to use. In January of last year, Angel and her husband started their own graphic/website design business: Charette Design Studio (CDS). In her spare time, Angel volunteers with Ladies Learning Code, and is the President of the Sudbury Design Society.
Was this the career you always envisioned for yourself? What inspired you to pursue this career?
Yes, graphic design was my dream career since the age of 12. I probably started to show signs of this path, at a young age, while passing my time drawing the fonts I saw on screen. I have to admit, after ten years of working close to minimum wage jobs, I was getting tired of not having a post-secondary education. A chance arose, I went back to school, worked hard and realised my dreams.
You own your business with your husband, Patrick. What’s it like working with your spouse?
I’ve known Patrick for over half my life (17 years), we’ve been together for nine and now married for 7. Working with family can be difficult, but Patrick and I have a comprehensive understanding to ensure the business runs smoothly. We started by creating rules such as separating our work life from our personal life, then dedicated specific roles and responsibilities that complement our strengths. During stressful situations, we announce who is addressing the other person because there’s always that fine line between life partner and business partner. For example, I would tell Pat: “…as your wife I think… …but as your business partner, I believe we should…” Working together is great because Patrick specialises in illustration, I specialise in programming, and we both have a different design style.
What is your favourite local spot in Sudbury?
Kuppajo Espresso Bar, is my fav place to go because they have excellent customer service, fresh food, good drinks and it’s a fun place to hang out.
