The Young Professionals Association of Greater Sudbury is run by a board of volunteers who dedicate their time to foster a culture of community engagement, networking, and professional development to empower emerging leaders and young professionals in Greater Sudbury. We wanted to take some time to introduce you to each of our board members in our Meet our Board blog series! Today we are introducing you to Amanda Zurkowski. Amanda is our Director of Communications.
Describe what you do.
I am a Business Development Consultant for a Document Management company, Northern Business Solutions. We understand that documents are always going to be essential, we help you manage them better. The part I love most about my career is that every single day is different. No two businesses have the same needs, and everything becomes tailored to that specific client. The relationships that I have built with my clients is by far the most important part of what I do.
Was this the career you always envisioned for yourself?
It was not what I thought I was going to do with my life, but now I can’t imagine doing anything else. I absolutely love what I do. I worked as a Counsellor for Adults with Developmental Disabilities and thought I had found my calling. A bad injury at work changed all of that. Prior to my current job, I ran my own Daycare. A life change, lead me to my career now. You know the old saying, “Everything happens for a reason…” I’m 100% a believer in that.
What inspired you?
I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to grow up watching my step dad build his business from the ground up. When he started his Pharmacy he was working out of the basement of the Mindemoya Hospital. Now with his brother and sister who are also Pharmacists, they own three pharmacies and a grocery store, and he and my mom own a cottage rental business. I have seen the hard work, the determination, the setbacks, and everything in between it takes to run a successful business. He by far is my biggest career influence. Hard work, dedication, and the right attitude is everything.
Why did you decide to join the YPA and what do you hope to achieve while on the board?
I decided I wanted to be an active Member of the YPA and being involved in the Board seemed like an excellent place to devote my time too. As a young professional myself, having a network such as the YPA is an essential tool for me as I grow my business. I wanted to be able to give of my time, become involved, and ultimately make a difference for other Young Professionals here in Sudbury. I believe that we are all stronger together.
Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
My biggest piece of advice for young professionals’ is don’t give up. If you fall down 7 times, get up 8. The business world is not easy, but if you’ve got goals that you’ve set out for yourself, then make sure you have a plan of how you’re going to attain those goals and go out and crush them. If you need a cheerleader, call me. I have a poster that hangs in my office that I bought in Cooperstown at the Baseball Hall of Fame. The second I saw it, I knew it was coming home with me. It’s a picture of Babe Ruth up at bat with a quote, “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” I look at this, EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. and it serves as a reminder to me, to never stop working hard.
What is your favourite local business?
There are so many incredible local businesses to choose from here in Sudbury. If I had to pick just one…I’d go with The Basement Fitness. I can’t say enough good things about this place. If you are looking for a place to workout, that treats you like family, where everyone knows your name, and everyone is cheering you on, this hands down is the place to go. I’ve been going for about 5 years now, and wouldn’t think of going anywhere else!
What would you do if you won the lottery?
If I won the lottery, I would travel around to every major sports stadium, following my favorite teams. I’m a diehard Pittsburgh Penguins fan, so I’d love to be able to see a game in every city. I’d take some time off and do some traveling, but I love what I do, so I’d be back to work pretty fast!
